Platform engineering at Portbase
The Dutch harbors and related businesses aim to be the smartest harbor community in Europe. That is also the goal of Portbase, the joint IT delegation of the Rotterdam and Amsterdam harbors. Portbase operates the port community system of the Dutch harbors, connecting all parties in the logistics supply chain by facilitating data sharing to make operations quicker and more efficient. This system creates approximately €250 million worth of added value for its partners, with ambitions stretching even higher. To further increase the added value, Portbase turned to Ynformed to develop new data services on top of the platform.
In collaboration with Portbase’s own data engineers and domain experts from Royal HaskoningDHV, we’re building a new information platform on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Utilizing the cloud for development of new IT applications, Portbase refrains from having to purchase and maintain a complex data center by itself. Additionally, AWS offers a number of standard components next to scalable computing power and storage that enable us to develop new services much more rapidly.
“As soon as a container is discharged and offloaded to the quay, all subscribed parties receive a real time notification.”
Before this platform and service existed, a client had to go through a cumbersome process to retrieve a container’s status. Scrolling through terminal and shipping company websites for example. Thanks to the new integrated service, there’s no need for manual lookups anymore. This also forms the basis for the next service we’re developing: the customs release confirmation, enabling customers to automatically declare goods at customs when a container has been discharged.
These are just two out of many examples of the logistics processes that are improved with the new platform. This way Ynformed is working with Portbase to make the Dutch harbors the smartest in Europe!
